Orlando Family Photography FAQ | Where to Shoot

Did you know that there are so many amazing spots for family photos in the Orlando area? Some of my favorite spots are right here in Oviedo (where I live) but there are also tons of nearby options in the Winter Park, College Park and Cocoa Beach area.

Below you’ll see some of my favorite places to shoot. When booking your session, just refer back to this page and let me know which backdrop you like best!

The Versatile Field Location

This spot has it all, and has been one of my go-to spots for years. I love how it can be used in so many different ways.

The first area you can pick here is a hidden gem. I found this accidentally — when I had to quickly make a plan B for one of my families due to some unforeseen construction. Like the spot I showcased above, this spot is also perfect for families who don’t want to do too much walking in tall grass to get to the pretty area with beautiful light. It’s super versatile too — there are some areas with tall grass, but also areas with more manicured grass that is better if kids want to do some exploring and not have to worry about… uh… creatures. There’s plenty of room to run and play in this spot, which is why it is for sure one of my favorites!

The versatile field location also has a gorgeous area with some trees near a wide-open field that I love to shoot at. We do a little bit more walking in tall grass to get here — so open-toed shoes aren’t recommended if you pick this spot — but I so love the variety of shots I can get if we opt to take a little adventure in this area. While it photographs beautifully at golden hour, it’s also my top recommended spot for when the weather is expected to be overcast.

The Tall Grass Spot

Sometimes, the most beautiful locations are the ones you’ll least likely expect! This tiny, easy-to-access spot is perfect for families who don’t want to do too much walking through the woods to get to the golden light. It’s tiny, so there won’t be as much room to run and play, but it’s great if we want a small, beautiful little space that won’t give the littles too much freedom to roam. If you choose this backdrop for your family photos, you’re sure to be surprised (and likely laugh a little) when I send you the location PIN. But trust me, it’s worth it!

2021 Update: While this location is still an option, it is a bit more overgrown than in past years.

The Ordinary Lots

Over the years, my eyes have been trained to examine every area off the side of the road and determine if it would be a good spot for photos. I’m not kidding — when I drive I do this. DAILY. I drove past both of these spots on a weekly basis, and always thought they would be perfect for family portraits. One sunset, I dragged my kids out here to test it out. And it was simply magical. I’ve since taken clients here and while they sure as surprised when the park, I’m so lucky that they always trust my vision and go with the flow.

The Sunrise Spot

If you’re brave enough to have your photos taken as the sun is rising, this is one of the places to be. I adore how this area always seems to have subtle fog at dawn. As the sun creeps up, it so beautifully creates golden bokeh behind the tree line, and speaking of trees — this spot has the most beautiful photo-worthy tree.

The Other Sunrise Spot

I absolutely LOVE this stunning location at sunrise. The back of one of our favorite public parks is on a lake, surround by the most beautiful greenery with a cute little dock that makes for the most perfect photos at sunrise. This spot is so versatile and easy to get to, with plenty of parking! It is certainly a favorite of mine.

Rollins College

Rollins College in Winter Park is for sure one of the most popular areas for photography, and while I don’t frequent there often, I do travel here if a client requests it. In past years, I’ve stuck to shooting in that popular rose garden area, but a couple of years ago I took the time to explore the campus more and found some amazing little nooks that photograph beautifully!

I would personally avoid this area during the peak holiday season, simply because of the crowds, but if you’re opting for an off-season session or willing to do your holiday photos a few weeks before most, this may be the location for you!

2021 Update: While this location is still an option, Rollins now charges a fee to take images on their campus, which will be added on to your invoice.

Your House…. or Favorite Ice Cream Shop

You don’t need to get dressed all fancy for your pictures. Did you know that your house, or your favorite ice cream shop may be the best spot of all? I love being that fly-on-the-wall and clicking away as your family just does their thing. This lovely family opted to have me meet them at their house, and I photographed some tree climbing, swinging and a short family bike ride before heading to their favorite ice cream shop!

The Beach

One of the things I miss most about living in south Florida is how close I was to the beach. But, I do still travel to the beach for clients. Expect an early morning wakeup call if you’re opting for a beach session (I only shoot on the beach at sunrise), but if you book a sunrise beach session in the summer, you can plan to stay the rest of the day for some fun in the sun and — bonus —you’re guaranteed a prime parking spot!
